Yamaha Upright Pianos

by Terje

Yamaha have been constructing the upright piano since 1900. Since 1999, they have introduced many new features to produce a warmer richer tone with more character.

The Yamaha upright piano U series has received the benefits of the famous Yamaha piano technology with its new scale design. This ensures an even timbre over the whole range of the keyboard, producing that famous warm rich tone which these superior pianos are famous for. The accurate piano action gives the pianist the ultimate control over the keyboard.

The Yamaha upright piano U series have been specifically crafted to cater for the school, institution, or the professional to play at home. All the pianos in this range feature the very handy soft-shut fall system, which protects the pianists fingers from a slamming lid.

These pianos are available in a variety of finishes. The cabinet is a more traditional style featuring double front and rear castors made of solid brass. These upright pianos have more had more time invested in their construction and feature superior materials.

All Yamaha uprights feature spruce keys. This wood is very light, and has a very high proportion of strength to weight. This enables the keys to respond very quickly, essential for very fast repetitions. The spruce wood also ensures the keys are extremely sturdy and suited to many years of hard handling.

A great advantage of all of the Yamaha upright pianos is that they all have the grand piano key travel. This means that no matter which piano you play in the range, the action and keys all feel exactly the same. Yamaha season all of their pianos for the country of destination.

These pianos all have solid copper wound bass strings, cut thread tuning pins, maple bridges, solid spruce soundboard and ribs, acoustibars, and full length ribs in notched liners. From a practical point of view, the music desk has been made increased in size to fully accommodate those larger pieces of music. The hammers have been redesigned, as have the back posts to ensure extra rigidity and increased balance and tone.

The Yamaha U1 is 121 cm tall. Being over 120 cm, it has all the benefits of a larger upright piano, both from a musical sound and also technological point of view. This piano is the least costly in the U range.

The Yamaha U3 is 131 cm tall and is the most popular upright piano. The full height of this piano allows for full bass, a rich middle and a clear treble. The redesigning has produced an extremely dynamic range and impressive performance. This piano has extended projection and power due to the sizeable acoustic chamber and soundboard. The Yamaha U3 also has a floating support system which results in the soundboard being able to vibrate more easily. This results in an improvement in the character and depth of the mid range and bass tones.

The Yamaha U5 is also 131 cm tall. This piano is considered the ultimate in the upright range. Unfortunately, this piano has been discontinued, so to purchase this fine musical instrument you will have to contact your nearest Yamaha dealer.

Yamaha upright pianos have long been regarded to be of superior quality, due to their design, components and construction. Over the years they have proven themselves with their serviceability, reliability, and stamina.
