by Terje

Kawai upright pianos provide the astute piano player with sturdy constructions, ensuring years of trouble free piano playing, with an affordable price. Kawai have recently added modern technology to their pianos combining the pleasures of a finely crafted piano with environmentally friendly features.

The Kawai Piano company is certainly moving ahead with the times. Sensitive to consumer's demands for environmentally friendly products, this company has implemented many world first advances. Indeed, in 1997, Kawai became the first piano manufacturer to be awarded the ISO 14001. This award recognizes excellence in environmental management. Aspects considered include reduction of waste, energy conservation, reforestation, and preservation of natural resources.

The Kawai Piano manufacturing company began in Hamamatsu, Japan. Koichi Kawai was the son of a wagon maker, apprenticed to a man who was keen to make pianos. In 1927, Koichi Kawai, along with seven others, created the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory in Hamamatsu, Japan.

The Kawai K-Series of upright pianos have all the many advantages of the Kawai technology along with an inexpensive price. From a style point of view, the cabinet is constructed of lacquered black wood. The matching piano seat is easily height adjusted to suit every member of the family. The Kawai k25 has had the latest expertise included in the form of the patented Millennium 111 action. With the introduction of the lighter ABS Carbon parts, there is a much faster response than with the usual wooden actions. This has resulted in the speed being 16% faster than the conventional upright piano. The ABS Carbon also ensures that the action parts, although lighter, still retain their strength and rigidity. The piano keys are balanced and weighted individually. In keeping with their environmentally aware policy, the weighted keys are no longer produced from lead, but iron.

The Kawai k25 has the dimensions of 122 x 150 x 59 cm. The turning pins are nickel plated and the iron frame has been reinforced with 4 backposts that have been laminated.

The Kawai K-Series provides the pianist with superior touch and feel with the ultra responsive direct blow action. To dramatically improve the pianissimo playing of this upright, a micro sensitive surface texture has been added to the jack at the juncture of the hammer. An impressive 12 year factory warranty is an added bonus. For more information on the Kawai k25 here is an excellent site: http://www.kawai.net.au/upright.html.

Kawai have also decided to use a derivative of natural cellulose as an ivory substitute for many of their keyboards. Although this product has the absorbency and feel of ivory it has the advantages of resisting discoloration, cracking and brittleness, while being a far more responsible product ecologically.

"At Kawai, the quest for perfection is not just an ideal ... but a duty." Hirotaka Kawai. Producing beautiful music in an ecologically pleasing manner, the Kawai upright piano is surely a win-win solution.
