Piano Music Books Provide Insight
by Terje Brooks Ellingsen
Piano music books are created by pianists for pianists and offer a large amount of information on piano music compositions. If you are interested in learning a lot of different pieces of music, these will offer a variety of selections. Many writings will cover a specific time period or style of works, allowing you to pick out similar themes without having to spend a lot of time searching for your interests. Online bookstores that have audio libraries offer a much wider selection than many general retailers, as well as knowledgeable sellers who can find you the book that is right for your interests. There are collections available for all different skill levels of pianists, from the beginner to the master performer. These books are often specially designed so that you can mount them on top of the instrument allowing you to easily read the sheets they contain while playing a piece.
There are also books that are designed to teach you about the instrument itself. For example, you can learn how to build your own instrument, as well as proper tuning and maintenance. You can also learn the different styles used by artisans who have built famous pianos in the past, in case you want to shop around and see if you can find a historic antique. There are many different types of pianos that performers have used throughout history. The earliest pianos were modified harpsichords, consisting of little more than the keyboard itself. Later crafters designed additions that allowed improved audio experiences, allowing the piano to produce much deeper and louder notes. Other additions included foot pedals and longer keyboards to increase the number of possible sounds created. The materials and construction used in pianos changed as the Industrial Revolution shifted production from hand crafted instruments to mass produced and standardized pianos. Some pianists prefer to use replicas of period instruments to create a more authentic performance of a composer's works.
Other piano music books can give you insight into the historical background of composers. Many of the Classical composers tried to create works that were rational and methodical. Romantic composers tried to draw out the ancient spiritual practices of the inhabitants of their countries in past ages. Some Romantic composers added nationalistic themes, modifying traditional folk ballads and fables to create a martial spirit. Many musicians throughout time used their compositions to commemorate historical military victories or memorialize sorrowful defeats. These records can give more in depth information into the other influences upon the composer of a piece. For example, other musicians may have formed circles and collaborated to share artistic innovations. Powerful nobles have influenced composers to design works according to their personal preferences. There are also pieces that were created as responses to rivalries between famous composers who were active during the same time period, such as the conflict between Mozart and Salieri. Background can give you insight into the style the composer intended to use for a performance, as the print alone will not explain the story behind each piece. Piano music books can guide you to create a fuller and richer setting for your performances.
