Baby Grand Pianos. Where Less is More

by Terje Brooks Ellingsen

Do you live in a house as opposed to a concert hall? Does your lounge room have to accommodate a plasma screen TV as well as your good piano? Perhaps you can have both. Many piano manufacturers are now making a baby grand piano on a smaller scale to allow for pianists with limited budgets and space.

The smallest baby grand pianos start at approximately 1.5 m (4' 11") long. Some baby grands are actually wider than they are long. Whereas concert grand pianos can be up to 3 m long and require a huge space and high ceiling to properly accommodate them, baby grand pianos are now being made to fit into your bay window. The other advantage to a smaller grand piano is the less expensive price tag.

The baby grand piano falls into the following length measurements of 1.5 m to 1.57 m (5' to 5' 2"). Compare this to the standard vertical or upright piano which has a standard length of 91 cm to 132 cm (36" to 52"). Certainly, you can see from this that even with the baby grand, a significantly bigger space is required. Perhaps the avid piano player could trade the plasma screen for the piano of your dreams?

Yamaha, Steinway, and Suzuki piano manufacturers all cater to the baby grand piano market. In this article we will give you the brief dimensions of some of these currently available.

Yamaha GB1. This is a compact baby grand piano at 4' 11". This little beauty has been created especially for those with a smaller wallet and lounge room. This baby of grand pianos claims to have not lost any of its performance with its smaller proportions.

Yamaha A1L. This has the same size as the aforementioned GB1, being 4' 11" long. The A1 claims to have a superior action and more mellow tone than the GB1. This style of baby grand was recently overhauled with a vast array of new developments, allowing it to produce a superior sound for its tiny size.

Yamaha Disklavier Baby Grand. This digital baby grand piano measures 4' 11" in length. Yamaha has incorporated the keyboard and action of the acoustic piano and merged it with their cutting edge technology to produce the fine mechanics of a grand piano with digital capabilities.

Steinway Baby Grand Piano. Steinway pianos have a model S baby grand which is 155 cm (5' 1") long. This is feted as being appropriate for an apartment and is produced from hard rock maple wood.

Suzuki Baby Grand AG500. The Suzuki baby grand piano is 5' (152 cm) long. This smaller of the grand pianos has an even key action, is purportedly built to extremely high standards, and has a genuine sounding tone.

Grand pianos are very demanding of space and money. Baby grand pianos are the perfect solution for the aspiring Elton John or Beethoven amongst us who really wants to tickle the ivories, but only has a spare bay window to accommodate this life long investment.
