The Advantages of a Digital Piano over a Traditional Upright Piano.

Gone are the days when you needed plenty of money and space to accommodate your desire to play the piano. Nowadays, with the advent of electronic keyboards, the world of piano playing has been opened up to everyone.

What is a digital piano? Well, the answer to that is quite simple. By definition, a digital piano is a musical instrument that incorporates a keyboard with some modern technology to replicate the sound of a traditional upright piano. Some of these electronic keyboards have the appearance of a traditional piano with the underneath being enclosed, while others are visually more along the lines of a portable electronic keyboard. ie: a keyboard on a stand or legs.

Let's look at the advantages of a digital piano:

1. unlike the traditional piano, no tuning is ever required. You can relocate this electronic beauty as often as you like without ever calling in the piano tuner.

2. they weigh less and take up less space than their traditional musical counterparts. No formal room required.

3. they cost less, which makes them perfect for children who are learning, and those of us with limited finances.

4. they often have extra options to aid the learner, in the form of keys that light up to show you which keys to play to learn your favorite musical piece.

5. they often have settings which allow you to select the type of piano you wish to emulate. Your little keyboard can produce the sound of a concert grand piano or a church organ if you so desire.

6. you can often change the sound altogether and instead of hearing piano, can produce a woodwind instrument, string ensemble or pretty much anything else. This option tends to be very popular with the children.

7. once you have created your own musical masterpiece there is generally an option for you to record this for future listening. Most allow you to record a minimum of 2 tracks.

8. they generally have auto harmony, which means if you never mastered the art of chords with your left hand, this option will play the complex chords for you.

9. they are implemented for MIDI. After the 1980's, the implementation of the MIDI has allowed for amazing technological functions. Interactive lessons, musical notation or printing of music, software synthesis or computer generated sound, and musical sequencer or recording of digital audio and MIDI. This means that other sequencers and electrical instruments can either be controlled or control the keyboard. They can also have external media slots or disc drives which allow you to load MIDI data which the piano can then automatically play.

10. after the year 2000, there is now a whole new generation of computer enhanced musical instruments or CEMI that are including the technologies of the Internet with these instruments.

11. most digital pianos have foot pedals that perform the same functions as their traditional counterparts.
